How we rank the best horse racing betting sites in Canada

Our experts created our list of the best horse racing betting sites in Canada by considering numerous factors. Below are the most important things we used when making our list.

Markets and odds

A betting market refers to the bets offered by a sportsbook. For example, some horse racing betting sites may only offer bets on who will win. Other sites may offer bets on the winner, podium placement, or prop bets related to the race. The wider the betting market, the better the site. However, this can be quickly overshadowed if the site does not offer fair horse racing odds.

Horse Racing coverage

In addition to offering many types of bets, we also consider how many races a betting site makes available to bet on. At a minimum, a top betting site should offer bets for the big races. However, to be one of the best, a site should offer bets on horse races all around the country and even the world.

Bonuses and Promotions

As fun as betting on horse races is, it can be expensive. Sites that offer generous horse racing betting bonuses and promotions get a big thumbs up from us.

Mobile Experience

Long are the days of having to go to the race track to bet on horse racing. Now, you can place bets from the comfort of your home or on the go. The best sites will make this as easy as possible.

Banking and Payout Speed

Horse race betting is not all about the money, but it is nice to win. When you do win, you are going to want your money fast and in a method you actually use regularly. All good horse racing betting sites should offer a wide variety of banking options and have fast payouts.

 Security and Trust

Everything we have discussed so far is important, but nothing tops security and trust. Every site we review is a reputable brand that you should be able to trust.

Is it legal to bet on horse racing in Canada?

Simply put, yes, it is legal to bet on horse racing in Canada. In fact, horse racing betting was one of the only legal forms of betting in Canada prior to the legalisation of sports betting in 2021.

Horse racing betting online is regulated by the federal government of Canada and excluded from the criminal code, which means it was not affected by the legalisation of sports betting in Canada. This has caused some problems in Ontario, which we will discuss next, but overall, betting on horse races in Canada is legal.

Is Horse Racing Betting Legal in Ontario?

As we mentioned above, legal single-event sports betting has had some unintended consequences for horse racing betting in Ontario. When Parliament legalised sports betting in Canada, it left it up to the provinces to create their own regulatory regime.

Ontario took the ambitious approach of completely opening up its online gambling market to private sector online casinos and sports betting sites. Unfortunately, because horse racing betting is regulated by the federal government, new online sports betting sites in Ontario could not offer online horse racing betting. This is still the case currently, but it could be changing soon.

Bet365 and Woodbine Entertainment, a legal race track and horse racing sportsbook operator in Canada, have agreed to a landmark deal which allows for Bet365 to accept horse racing bets under Woodbine Entertainment’s licence. Practically speaking, this means Ontario bettors can only bet on horse racing using Bet365 or Woodbine Entertainment platforms.

Horse racing betting bonuses and promos

Every site on our list of best horse racing betting sites offers some kind of welcome bonus. Some go a step further and offer special promotions just for horse racing betting.

Bet365

New Bet365 bettors are eligible for $100 in bet credits when they sign up now and place a $1 bet. This is a fairly standard as far as sportsbook bonuses go, but Bet365 makes up for it by holding regular promos. They unfortunately do not have any horse-racing-specific promos currently, but there are a number of general promos you can use when you bet on horse racing.

Betway

Betway is currently offering new customers a 100% deposit bonus up to $200. This means that Betway will give you bonus bets equal to the amount of your first deposit (up to $200).

BetVictor

BetVictor is also offering a deposit matching bonus. When you sign up for BetVictor now, they will match 100% of your first deposit, up to $400.

Bwin

Bwin is yet another site with a first deposit matching bonus. If you are new to Bwin and create an account now, the site will match 100% of your first deposit, up to $200.

888sport

888sport also offers a first deposit matching bonus. The site will match 100% of your first deposit, up to $250. However, 888sport stands out since it offers so many regular promotions. They do not have any horse racing promos now, but look out for odds boosts, bonus bets, and other similar promos as big races come up.

Sports Interaction

Sports Interaction offers new customers the most generous matching bonus we have seen so far. New users will have 100% of their first deposit matched up to an astonishing $1,000.

Pinnacle

Pinnacle is the only one of our best horse racing betting sites that does not offer Canadian bettors a welcome bonus. While not a dealbreaker, this is a significant drawback of playing at Pinnacle compared to using any of the other sites we have mentioned.

LeoVegas

LeoVegas has the most complicated welcome bonus of any horse racing sportsbook on our list. New players can get up to $1,000 cash and $30 in bonus bets if they make an eligible deposit and wager 10x that deposit amount three times.

BetMGM

BetMGM will match new users’ first deposit as bonus bets up to $200. However, BetMGMs new horse racing sportsbook is not currently available in Canada.

Bodog

Bodog will match 100% of your first deposit up to $400 and give you 50 free spins for the “Gods of Luxor” slot that you can use in the Bodog online casino. If you are a crypto user, Bodog will match your first crypto deposit up to $600.

Guide to Horse Racing Betting

If you are new to horse racing betting, it may look really complicated. Thankfully, getting a grasp of betting on horses is pretty easy. To prove it to you, we have made a handy guide for you to read below.

How to start betting

Getting started betting on horse race betting is as easy as picking a betting site, making your first deposit, and then placing your first bet. We cover each of these steps in detail for you.

Choose your betting site

The first thing to know about horse betting online  is where to place your bets. Our list of the best horse racing betting sites is a good place to start, but it is a little more complicated than that. Some betting sites have different sites or betting apps just for horse betting.

This is why it is important to choose a site or app that you feel comfortable using. If you are only interested in horse racing betting, it might not be a problem to have to go to a different site or app. If you prefer an all-in-one-place kind of sportsbook, it could be annoying to have to toggle between sites or change apps every time you want to bet on horse racing.

In addition to this possible logistical quirk, you are also going to want to consider the other factors we discussed above in our section on how we rank horse racing betting sites.

Does the site have a good welcome bonus? Does it have a wide betting market? Does it have an easy-to-use app?

These are just some of the things you should be asking yourself.

Make your first deposit

Once you have picked your preferred horse racing betting site, you will need to put money into your account. If you are playing at one of the many sites with a first deposit welcome bonus, this could be a very important step for you to pay attention to.

If the betting site you chose will match your first deposit, you might want to consider making a big first deposit. We advise you to be cautious though and read through terms and conditions closely because some sites may have high playthrough or betting requirements.

Another factor you should consider at this step is how you are going to make deposits in the future. The first deposit is often the hardest because you have to set up your preferred payment method. We suggest picking a method you will use often so that making deposits is quick in the future.

We also advise trying to pick a deposit method that you can use for withdrawals too. Most sports betting sites process deposits almost instantly. However, withdrawals can take a bit of time, depending on the method.

The most popular banking options at horse racing betting sites are credit/debit cards (Visa/Mastercard), e-wallets (Apple Pay, Interac, MuchBetter, etc), and prepaid cards (Maestro). Some sites, like Bodog, also accept cryptocurrency.

Make your first bet

Putting money in your horse racing sportsbook account obviously allows you to start making horse racing wagers.

At most sites, finding horse racing bets is easy. It will normally be among the rest of sports at the top of the page or along the side. Some sites have dedicated web pages just for horse racing betting, which can complicate things a bit. However, once you get to the right page, things are very simple.

Horse racing betting pages will have the races available to bet on clearly listed. Most sites will also highlight the popular bets for those races. If you want to dig into the entire betting market for a specific race, usually all you need to do is click on the race.

Once you find the bet you want, click on it, enter the amount you want to wager, and submit your bet. Viola! It is that easy.

Example from Bet365

We know this is a lot of information to throw at you, so we decided it would be best to use an example. We have chosen Bet365. See below for the steps for creating a Bet365 account, making your first deposit, and placing your first bet.

The process below is similar for all the horse racing online betting sites we discuss in this article.

Step 1: Go to the official Bet365 website and click the “Join” button

Bet365 Step 1: Go to website

Step 2: Fill out the Bet365 signup form with your name, date of birth, occupation, email address, phone number, and address

Bet365 - Open A New Account Form

Step 3: Set your limits (optional), agree to the terms and conditions, click “Join bet365”

Bet365 - Set Deposit Limits Screen

The three simple steps above are all you need to do to create your new Bet365 account. If you are in Ontario, you may also be asked to confirm your identity.

After you create your account, you will be prompted to make your first deposit. Bet365 will have clear instructions for how to do this and for how to claim your Bet365 welcome bonus.

The last thing you need to do is to place your first bet. As you can see from our first screenshot above, the Bet365 horse racing page is easy to access. You just need to click the “horse racing” tab on the left-hand side of the main page.

Once you do that, you should get to a page that looks something like this:

From this page, you should be able to find most races and tons of possible bets for each of them. Once you select a bet you like, your betslip will appear on the page and you can make your wager.

Markets, betting types and odds

We covered the broad strokes above, so now, it is time to dive a little deeper. The next important things you need to understand about betting on horse racing are the betting markets and betting odds.

Betting markets

Betting markets refer to the types of bets available. If you are familiar with betting on other sports, against-the-spread bets, over/under bets, and money line bets are the most popular betting markets for traditional sports.

In horse racing, things are a little more complicated. You have straight bets and exotic bets. To make things simple, you should think about straight bets as the traditional betting markets from above and you should think about exotic bets almost as parlay bets.

The most popular straight bets are wagers on whether a horse will win, place, or show. Win bets are obviously a wager on a horse to win a race outright. Place bets are wagers that a horse will finish first or second. Show bets are wagers that a horse will finish first, second, or third.

The most common exotic horse racing bets are exacta, quinella, trifecta, and superfecta bets. The reason these are exotic bets is because they are much harder to win.

For exacta bets, you bet on two horses to finish first and second. Both horses must finish in the exact order you wagered on for you to win. Quinella bets are just like exacta bets, except the order does not matter.

Trifecta bets are bets on first, second, and third. Like exacta bets, the exact order you wagered on must hit for you to win. Superfecta bets are the same as exacta and trifecta bets, but you predict the first four places as opposed to the first two or three.

Betting odds

Understanding horse betting odds is unfortunately a little more difficult than reading traditional sports betting odds. Horse racing uses the pari-mutuel wagering system. Pari-mutuel wagering odds rely on how many people bet on the same horse as you.

For example, if the total pot of $1000 and $500 of that was bet on Horse X, then every Horse X bettor would get $2 for every $1 they bet. However, if Horse Y won and only $100 was bet on Horse Y, every Horse Y bettor would get $10 back for every $1 they bet.

Thankfully, most sports betting sites will make an estimate of the odds available to you when you go to place your bet.

Type of horse racing

Horse racing is a very simple sport, but there are some nuances about the types of races that you should know about.

The vast majority of horse racing bettors will be wagering on thoroughbred racing. These races are the big events you are probably already familiar with. These events are no frills races where jockeys and their horses simply race to be the fastest.

Jump racing is another popular type of horse racing among sports bettors. These races are like traditional thoroughbred races but with obstacles on the course that the horses must hurdle.

Harness racing is the final popular category of horse racing. These events resemble old-roman chariot races with one horse pulling a driver in a two-wheeled cart. These kinds of races are more popular outside of North America, but are popular nonetheless.

Horse racing betting features

Special features can sometimes make or break a sports betting site, especially when it comes to something as exciting as horse racing. These are the features that we think all the best horse racing betting sites should have.

Live Streaming

Streaming rights for major leagues like the NBA and NHL are often highly coveted and very restricted. This is not the case with horse racing. Major race tracks all around the world make their races easy to stream.

A good horse racing betting site should have the ability to live stream races and race coverage so you can watch the race while you wager.

Live Betting

Live betting goes hand-in-hand with live streaming. Horse racing is an all action sport. Narratives, and more importantly, betting odds, can change in an instant. Being able to place live bets while a race is going on is a must.

It’s a huge plus if a betting site has both live betting and live streaming available.

Cash-out

Live betting caters to bettors who want to place a bet during a race. Cash-out features are made for people who want to cash in on a bet early.

Sites that have cash-out features allow bettors to cash out of their bet  before a race ends. This allows you to either claim your winnings early before it goes sour. On the other hand, you may want to cut your losses early before losing all of your bet.

Horse racing betting strategies, trends and tips

There are no guaranteed ways to make money on horse racing gambling. However, there are some tried and true strategies that bettors come back to over and over again. Before we get into the specific strategies, there are some general things you should always do.

First, always do your research. While it can be fun to bet on a horse with a name that makes you laugh, this strategy will not make you money in the long run. If you want to be a serious horse racing bettor, do your research into the horses, jockeys, and into what others are saying about the race.

Second, you should know who the favourite is and how big a favourite they are. Knowing the favourite is obviously important, but knowing how big a favourite they are is really key. If one horse is expected to dominate an entire circuit, you may need to adjust your betting strategy.

Finally, like with all kinds of gambling, do not wager more than you are willing to lose. Do not chase and know your limits.

Now, let’s talk about two specific strategies.

Dutch Betting

This strategy involves spreading your bets around. It is similar to handicapping. For example, if Horse A is getting 30% of bets, Horse B is getting 30% of bets, and Horse C is getting 20%, you can split your total bet amount in a similar way.

80/20 Strategy

Advocates of the 80/20 strategy split their total wager amount between two different bets on the same horse. 20% of the amount they are willing to wager goes on the horse to win outright. The remaining 80% goes to a bet backing the horse just to place.

Major Horse Racing Events

The king of all horse racing events in North America is the Kentucky Derby. This showcase event overshadows many of the other great horse races in the US and Canada every year.

King’s Plate

The King’s Plate, formerly known as the Queen’s plate during the reigns of Queen Victoria and Queen Elizabeth II, is Canada’s oldest and most prestigious thoroughbred race. Like its American counterpart, the Kentucky Derby, the King’s Plate is the first race in a triple crown.

The King’s Plate was first held in 1860 at the Carleton Racetrack, which was located in The Junction neighbourhood of Toronto. Modern races are held annually in August at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

Prince of Wales Stakes

The Prince of Wales Stakes is the second race of the Canadian Triple crown. It was first held back in 1929 at the defunct Thorncliffe Park Raceway in Toronto. It is now held at the Fort Erie Race Track in Fort Erie, Ontario every year in September. The purse for this year’s competition is $400,000.

Breeders’ Stakes

The Breeders’ Stakes is the third and final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown. The event is held annually in October at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto. At 1.5 miles long, it is the longest race in the Canadian Triple Crown series of races.

While equally important in terms of the Canadian Triple Crown, the Breeders’ Stakes is kind of the bridesmaid to the King’s Plate. The Breeders’ Stakes is just 19 years younger than the King’s Plate, but it is not seen to be as important. In our opinion, it is still a very fun event to bet on.

Woodbine Mile

The Woodbine Mile is the most important non-Triple-Crown horse race in Canada. Unlike Triple Crown races, only thoroughbred horses ages three and older can compete in the Woodbine Mile. In Triple Crown races, the horses must be three years old.

Another standout feature of the Woodbine Mile that makes it so exciting is the amount of prize money at state. The purse for this event is a whopping $1,000,000. For context, this is a bigger purse than the Prince of Wales Stakes and the Breeders’ Stakes races.

The Woodbine Mile is held annually in mid-September at the Woodbine Racetrack in Toronto.

The Canadian International Stakes and Canadian Derby are the two other major Canadian horse races popular among horse racing bettors.

Horse Racing Betting Terms

Like all sports, horse racing has its sports betting terms that can be hard for outsiders to understand. To help you get over the learning curve, here are some important terms you should know before you start horse racing gambling.

Blinkers and Brindles

These three terms all relate to equipment worn by a horse. You will commonly hear horse racing fans refer to them casually, so it is important to know what they are and their functions.

  • Blinkers, sometimes called blinders, are a type of headgear worn by horses to keep them focused on the face. This equipment blocks a horse’s peripheral vision so that they are only focused on what is in front of them. Whether a horse using blinkers for the first time or not can often have an effect on their performance, so look out for when this is being discussed.
  • Brindle is what goes over the horse’s head and allows the jockey to control the horse. A brindle will be discussed when talking about the difficulty a jockey has controlling their horse. If a jockey is effortlessly controlling their horse without moving their reins, the horse has performed very well.

Track Types

Different races are held on different types of tracks. For example, an all-weather racecourse is one with a track made of somelike like tapeta or sand that can be raced on at any time of the year. Turf tracks and synthetic tracks are also common. These things affect horse performance, so expect lots of turf talk when you get into horse racing betting.

Furlong

A furlong is the unit of measurement used in horse racing. One furlong is ⅛ of a mile. It is good to remember this, even if most races will also list the distance in miles.

Non-runner

Horses who withdraw from a race are referred to as non-runners.
